I’m not going to lie. I am disappointed with this controller because it could have been better. I like it much better than the classic controller, but ultimately there is almost no functional difference between the Classic Controller and the Classic Controller Pro. Nintendo had an opportunity to really improve the design, but it really isn’t much different from the classic controller except in two ways; the extended grip arms and the shoulder button layout. Even with those improvements though, this controller is not Nintendo’s most comfortable controller offering. Nintendo’s Wave Bird controller had a much more comfortable grip design and the shoulder buttons felt really nice. In fact, I am really confused when I think about why Nintendo would chose this design over tweaking the original Wave Bird controller format.
Pros:
- The shoulder button layout is much improved, similar to that of Sony and Microsoft’s controllers.
- The grip arms on the front are definitely nice, making for a much more comfortable grip.
- The D-pad has a bit of gritty texture to it, which is a nice but subtle touch.
Cons:
- We’re still stuck with the wire that plugs into Wii Remote.
- No rumble/force feedback feature.
- The (mediocre) analog shoulder buttons of the classic controller have been replaced with simple digital buttons.
- It feels a bit too light and flimsy to the touch, although it does seem to be fairly sturdy.
- Not compatible with GameCube games. Considering that it is nearly impossible to find a Wave Bird controller at a reasonable price it is still very unfortunate that most players will not be able to sit more than 6 feet away from their Wii while playing GameCube games.
Given my criticism, I won’t say that this is a bad controller; it just isn’t a great controller. Given the choice between this controller and a Classic Controller, this controller is definitely the better product and I recommend that every Wii owner own at least one of these if they don’t already have a Classic Controller lying around.

I much prefer the original classic controller. I can’t get comfortable holding the controller. Specifically, I hate how the ZL and ZR buttons extend down so low. It messes up the contour of the bottom of the controller. I can’t find a comfortable position for my middle finger. My hand isn’t comfortable with it on the ZL and ZR buttons (and how many games actually use those…), and it feels way to constrained gripping the controller behind them. The shape of the GameCube controller was much better because there was not a big dip on the underside before the L and R buttons. I have big hands, so that might be part of the problem.

I decided to pick one of these up at the local Best Buy to see if Pro is really as good as folks have been saying. I don’t actually own a Wii, I use a Mayflash adapter to use a flat style Wii Classic Controller on my PC. This could be just an issue with my particular model, but as soon as I got it out of the box I noticed the Analog Sticks as well as the D-Pad were very loose, so much that the D-Pad slid around in its housing. When I got my first flat Classic it had similar defects, and it took me several exchanges to get one I was 100% satisfied with, with tight sticks and a nice firm D-Pad. This little defect is why I’m holding back those extra 2 stars. Nintendo ought to enforce more stringent quality control on these things before they are shipped, so that way I -don’t- have to keep on exchanging until I get one that’s defect free and feels the way it SHOULD.
As for my gripes or commendations about the controller’s design, I’m going to try to sum those up in a “Pro vs. Con” instead of typing out lengthy paragraphs.
Pro: The L and R’s are digital instead of analog, allowing quicker response.
Con: Takes away potential use as Gas Pedal and Brake in racing games.
Pro: The bottom row of buttons are enlarged, making them easier to push.
Con: zL and zR are still only used in the menu. They could’ve swapped with L/R.
(for me this isn’t really a problem, since I can just swap them in Joy2Key).
Pro: Analog Sticks have spaced out further, negating accidental thumb collision.
Con: R stick hits thumb when in Y/B position (dash-jump in Super Mario World).
(can be avoided, if I edge my thumb slightly so it also rest on the edge of X/A, children whose fingers are smaller altogether probably have less issue with this but it’s supposed to be an Adult controller, right?).
Personal suggestions:
1: Could have given the tops of the Analogs a concave “cup” so that the thumb has something to slip into, instead of sliding off when the stick gets sweaty.
2: Could’ve inscreased the size of Start/Select/Home like on the Nyko Wing.
3: Mostly aesthetic, bring back the Yellow, Red, Blue, Green for YXBA as a little nostalgic nod to the PAL and Japanese SNES controller’s buttons.

**UPDATE** I took the Pro back to Best Buy where I got it and got a refund, then I went to Gamestop and talked to the clerk about the loose D-Pad and Sticks. He was nice enough to open up two Pros with a razor and let me feel them. Same frigging defects, which leads me to believe they ALL are like this. Really saddening, Nintendo should enforce better Quality Control before shipping their products, especially if Pro is going to replace the older model entirely**

With all the success of the Nintendo Wii, there are many gamers that can use other controllers to play some of their favorite games too, whether it is playing withgames through the virtual console, or downloading games through Wii Ware, the Classic Controller has handled very well for the Wii. Nevertheless, Nintendo has made the decision to expand their Classic Controller and improve it with the new Classic Controller Pro for the Wii. This new version of the classic controller has a easier grip that helps you control the games you play, whether it is a download of Super Mario 64, or playing certain Wii games that you buy that can be compatable with the controller like smashing your opponents during a match of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, or racing against others during a online race of Mario Kart Wii. While all the excitement is there, the only one major flaw Nintendo decided not to improve on is making the Classic Controller Pro compatable to the Nintendo Gamecube games that the Wii can play like The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I honestly wish overall Nintendo could’ve improved on that flaw. Nevertheless, it is a great buy for Wii owners that want to have the best in gameplay that Nintendo can only deliver.
